The 2023 Tour de France, the world’s largest cycling race, is well underway. The race began on July 1st in Bilbao, Spain and will end on July 23rd in Paris, France. With a total of 56,400 meters of accumulated altitude, this year’s race features many challenging mountain stages.

1. Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates, overtook his twin brother Simon Yates of Jayco AlUla to win the first stage of the race and claim the yellow jersey. This marks the first time in his career that he has won a stage at the Tour de France.

2. Victor Lafay of Cofidis won the second stage of the race, marking Cofidis’ first victory in 15 years.

3. Mads Pederson of Lidl-Trek won Stage 8 from Libourne to Limoges, beating out Jasper Philipsen and Wout van Aert.

4. Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo-Visma currently holds the yellow jersey with a 25-second lead over Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates.

5. Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck has won three stages so far in this year’s Tour de France.

6. Mark Cavendish, who holds the record for most stage wins at the Tour de France, had to withdraw from the race after crashing during Stage 8.

7. Simon Yates of Team Jayco AlUla slipped two places in the overall standings after crashing during Stage 8.

8. The first big mountain stages appeared earlier than usual this year, with Stage 6 featuring Col du Tourmalet and Stage 9 featuring Puy de Dôme.

9. Lidl-Trek have two riders who have never raced the Tour, Juanpe Lopez and Mattias Skjelmose. And two riders who had their debut only last year: Quinn Simmons and Alex Kirsch.
